About Civil Partnerships
A Civil Partnership is the formalisation of a relationship between two people of the same sex. The concept of Civil Partnership was introduced on 5 December 2005 and since this time same sex couples have been able to obtain legal recognition of their relationship.
Civil Partnerships are "gay marriage” in all but name and it is important to remember that, aside from all the traditional celebration and romance of a wedding, a Civil Partnership also brings with it a legally binding agreement and legal recognition of the relationship. This in turn brings various legal rights or benefits such as tax, employment and pension advantages as well as responsibilities to the other partner.
Once you enter into a Civil Partnership it can only be brought to an end if one of you dies or by making a application to the Court for the partnership to be dissolved.
