Miss K recovered £25,000 in compensation for internal injuries, resulting from being kicked in the abdomen by a horse. Her injuries included lacerations to her kidneys and liver, damage to her spleen and internal bleeding. Miss K made a good recovery, though her right kidney was left with some reduced function.
Mrs H was awarded £60,000 when her colon was negligently perforated during surgery resulting in the need for a colostomy bag. Mrs H also suffered pressure sores during her admission to a local hospital. The hospital admitted liability following service of a letter of claim.
Mrs C was awarded £25,000 for damage caused to her ureter following an elective laparoscopic caesarean section. Mrs C was discharged from hospital following the procedure despite complaints of severe pain. Subsequent scans revealed that the cause of the pain was due to a damaged ureter caused by heat from the operating instrument used during the laparoscopy. She later required bladder realignment surgery.
